Declare Your Independence!

Me:  Ugh, I had a really shitty day!
Tom:  Yeah?  What happened?
Me:  Well, the Sergeant Major was yelling at the Army guys about how they weren’t ready for inspection, and Smith and Jones got into a huge argument.  They knocked the fire extinguisher off its bracket and it went off and got foam all over the shop…
Tom:  OK, so why did that mean you had a shitty day – none of that stuff actually happened to you.

At first, I was really pissed off.  I felt like Tom was just unsympathetic, or just didn’t understand.  But then I thought about it for a bit, and realized he was absolutely right.  None of those things actually did happen TO me, they just happened around me.  I wasn’t getting yelled at by the Sergeant Major, I wasn’t in a fight, and I didn’t knock the fire extinguisher off into the floor.  So why did those things make me feel like I had a bad day?

Well, I used to pick up other people’s energy quite efficiently.  I’d pick it up…start running it myself…take on those emotions…let it make me feel like I’d had a horrible day.  I wasn’t aware that I was doing that, or the effect it was having on me.  I was carrying around stress, anger, frustration, jealousy, you name it, and none of it was really mine.  Not a good way to go through your day, huh?

As I was ‘recovering’ from energetic sensitivity, I had to learn how to identify the emotions I was feeling, and figure out if they were really mine or something I’d picked up.  Once I learned to do this, I could let go of the ones that weren’t mine, and work on the ones that were.  It was amazing how quickly this little trick let me learn the difference between my shitty day and someone elses!

Have you ever tried ‘examining’ your emotions this way?  When you get really good at it, you can identify exactly where that emotion came from:  “Hey, I picked this one up from that paranoid guy at the grocery store!”  Give it a try and let me know how well it works for you…  It’s time to declare your independence from other people’s stuff!  C’mon, you gotta admit it’s the perfect time of year for it…
